Background

HabITec is a rehabilitation center that research products, technologies, and devices that will need by people with disability. Their goal is to create a space for researchers, designers, practitioners, and consumers to collaborate on bringing up a possible solution to improve people with disability’s life.

Problem

In order to achieve an efficient, convenient, and engaging transition system for the wheelchair user-patient to return home in a safe environment, we pointed out the reasons and problems that had been frustrating and lowered the productivity performance of the audience. The problems mainly existed in three parts of the systems, which are Home assessment, Engagement, and Personalized home.

Proposed
Solution

An application that provides a quality communication platform, visual references of home modification examples, and interactive tools because it creates a fast and efficient process among different users, provides experiences exchanges and customized services.

  • For creating an efficient communication platform, the H2H application will include friends and groups chat room that allows people to use text, voice message, phone, and video calls to communicate.

  • In order to help the patient to have a better understanding of the home modification process and result, the H2H application will have an interface that provides previous client’s reviews and home modification examples as a reference for the patient.

  • To create a more engaging platform for the wheelchair user in this home modification process, having an online interactive 3D modeling tool for patients to personalize their home modification accessories helps patients to contribute and involve in the process. The 3D model will be provided by the builder after the occupational therapist sent out the final report.

Usability Tools

Two users were invited for the early-stage usability test for this project.

They are both above 50 years old which meets the same age reference as the wheelchair user group. Moreover, they both have access to the mobile app with their own smartphone, and they are not experts when it comes to using the new application.

I used Miro.com to create a board with two colors of boxes, which yellow boxes represent the Tasks that they want to achieve, and the green boxes are the steps that they need to do.

Test Results & Feedback

Positive

  • It’s convenient to see others' works and check for references.
  • I like there's no comment on the post because it made it more private.
  • It's easy to find all the information under the guidance of both text and icons.

Negative Findings

  • The home modification icon is misleading, two out of four participants found that the icon feels more like the personal home page. (fixed)
  • Two out of four participants mentioned that the house modification page doesn't look consistent with others. (fixed)
  • Some of the pages do not have arrow navigation. (fixed)
